Ideas for Your Outlander Wedding Theme

Looking for inspiration for your Outlander-themed wedding? Say no more. As both a huge Outlander fan and a photographer with years of weddings under my belt, I've gathered some ideas that range from a subtle nod to a full-out Castle Leoch gathering.

For where all love is, the speaking is unnecessary

A wedding day is absolutely filled with opportunities to infuse romance, adventure, and the rich Scottish heritage that defines this beloved series. Here are some ideas to help you bring the world of Outlander to life:

  1. Location, Location, Location: Choose a venue that embodies the rugged beauty of the Scottish Highlands. Look for castles, historic estates, or rustic barns with sweeping views of nature. If possible, opt for a venue with stone walls, wooden beams, and a sense of history that will transport guests back in time. If you're looking to elope, the world is truly your oyster - you could even visit Lallybroch itself.
  2. Lush Textures and Dark Colors: If you're like me, you might be obsessed with the production design of Outlander. I'd recommend picking favorite scenes or sets and distilling elements down to something you'd want at your wedding - this could be as subtle as swatching the colors to find your scheme, or as full-send as custom designing your wedding dress like Claire's.
  3. Romantic Lighting: Set the mood with romantic lighting that evokes the ambiance of Outlander. Illuminate your venue with soft candlelight and twinkling fairy lights to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. We all know how romantic those candlelit tablescapes are!
  4. Floral Arrangements: Incorporate Scottish flora into your bouquets, centerpieces, and ceremony decor. Opt for blooms like heather, thistle, and Scottish roses to evoke the wild beauty of the Highlands. Consider adding touches of greenery, such as ferns and eucalyptus, to create a lush, organic look. If you don't see exact replicas available or in season, a florist should be able to emulate some of those textures with alternate blooms.
  5. Outlander-Inspired Stationery: Set the tone for your wedding with stationery that reflects the Outlander theme. Choose invitations featuring Celtic knot designs, Scottish landscapes, or quotes from the books. Carry the theme through to your ceremony programs, place cards, and signage, incorporating elements like wax seals, aged parchment, and calligraphy. Details can be so fun, especially when they're intentional to what you love.
  6. Music and Entertainment: Set the mood with traditional Scottish music played by a bagpiper or Celtic band. If you want to get literal with it, end the night with a lively rendition of "The Skye Boat Song," the hauntingly beautiful theme song from the Outlander series.
  7. Book Favors: This is more of a general bookish idea, but if you're an avid reader and want to provide favors to your guests, consider thrifting some favorites.

By infusing your wedding with these Outlander-themed ideas, you'll create an unforgettable celebration that captures the magic and romance of Jamie and Claire's epic love story. Don't forget to do your research about Scottish traditions and be prepared to respect closed practices, too.

Raise a glass of whisky, and prepare to embark on a journey through time and tradition as you say "I do" in true Outlander style. Slàinte mhath!
